Technical illustrations, such as these two samples of drawings done for Golden Gate National Parks Association to depict Alcatraz Island, are something Lawrence has been developing for many years. The availability of new software has enhanced his ability to create exploded views and aerial diagrams. Click on the drawings to see them enlarged. For wildlife illustrations, click here.

How the aerial view of the island was created:

All the elements of the island--topography, buildings, walkways and dock--were drafted in MiniCad from ground measurements, scaled photographs, an aerial photograph and a few blueprints that survived. After all the buildings were drafted, (an incredibly tedious task of entering numeral after numeral to create the drawings,) they were imported into a three-dimensional program, Strata Studio Pro. An angle was choosen for this view, and then Lawrence did a pen and ink drawing from his 3-D model. The drawing was then scanned, and color applied with a digital tablet in the program Photoshop.

Top view below is the contemporary view; below it is the view of the island in 1867.
